Concrete Angel written by Martina McBride is the song that first came to my mind that relates to the theme of complete innocence. The lyrics in the song Concrete Angel tell a deep story about a seven year old girl
named Angela Carter. Sadly, as a young and adolescent child, Angela battles continuous physical and emotional abuse from her
alcoholic mother. Angela’s innocence and courage is eventually toppled
from the constant abuse that she deals with throughout her life. Even though
her heart is torn, the lyrics state:
Through the wind and the rain She stands hard
as a stone In a world that she can't rise above But her dreams give her wings And she flies to a place where she's
loved
Concrete Angel
Relating back to the theme of Complete Innocence, we realize that even though Angela’s heart is torn by the permanent
damage that she experiences from her abusive mother, she learns from it and tries not to let it affect her who she is as an
individual. I think that the artist named this song Concrete Angel because regardless
of what happened to Angela, she remained strong throughout her journey regardless of what happened. If you view the music video for this particular song, you realize that whenever Angela is not around her
mother, she is in her own happy world. When Martina sings, “And she flies
to a place where she is loved”, she implies that this place is not only heaven, but a place where everyone that loves
Angela is with her at last. In heaven, she is able to forget about the past and
continue to follow her dreams while sharing her excitement for life with all of those around her.

In the movie Blood Diamond,
we meet a very innocent young man who’s name is Solomon. Solomon plays
a very important role as the hero throughout the entire movie. The most innocent
part of the movie is at the beginning when Solomon acts as a father figure and sends his son, Dia off on his “journey”
to school. Unfortunately, just like in the song Concrete Angel, Solomon’s
innocence and dreams are shattered when the rebels destroy his soul. They do
this by separating him from his son, invading his village and kidnapping Solomon to work as a slave in the diamond mines.
After Solomon makes a mistake by hiding a very valuable pink diamond, he is arrested by the government army which causes his
courage to be toppled once again. Fortunately, Solomon learns from his mistake
and knows never to do that again. As this is all happening, not only is he losing
his innocence, Solomon’s family is being destroyed. He is saddened by the
fact that he may never see his family again and pleads to exchange the diamond that he discovered for his missing family. Solomon learns from his past and realizes that if he tries hard enough, there is still
a chance to find his missing son. If Solomon follows the rules and believes in
himself, Danny and he will be capable of finding his lost son, Dia.

In the novel, The Kite Runner¸ we experience a very similar event to the abuse that occurs in the song Concrete Angel. At the beginning of the novel, Amir and Hassan came to be very good friends while
holding a strong bond between each other at times. However, one day after a kite
running competition, a horrific event occurred that crushed the innocence of Hassan and stole everything within him. Hassan was raped by three boys and there was nobody around to save him. His spirit was crushed and there was not much left in him at that moment in time. This situation relates to the theme of complete innocence because even though the rape stole a lot out
of him, he was able to regain his strength and move on with life. Fortunately,
he and his wife gave birth to their very own child named Sohrab. Before Hassan’s
death, he was able to teach Sohrab the many things that he and Amir had done throughout their childhood. Hassan’s wish was then completed when Amir adopted Sohrab into his family, confirming to Hassan that
he was safe at last.

When analyzing the song, Concrete Angel and comparing it to Blood Diamond and The Kite Runner, evidently, there
are many similarities between them. All three characters, Angela, Solomon and
Hassan all encountered very hard obstacles in their life. In order to move on
however, they had to find some way of overcoming their own battles. Luckily,
all three of them believed in themselves and never gave up on life. They were
able to learn from the situations that they encountered and eventually passed it on to their loved ones. These events allowed them to also learn and develop new qualities that contributed to the person
they became in the end.
